Teniendo en cuenta los desafíos que trajo el 2020, muchos de los libros que los líderes empresariales recomiendan este año no son técnicamente libros de negocios en absoluto, o de este año: la historia del 2004 de John Barry sobre una pandemia anterior, The Great Influenza, fue citada tanto por Axel Hefer, director gerente de Trivago, como por David Solomon, presidente y CEO de Goldman Sachs, quien dijo que era “importante tratar de ayudar a poner la pandemia en contexto”.

El épico recuento de Erik Larson sobre el manejo de Winston Churchill del Blitz de 1940, The Splendid and the Vile, fue una elección popular. “El libro habla de un liderazgo intrépido en la hora más oscura”, dice Jonathan Gray, presidente y director de operaciones de Blackstone Group. “Una lección poderosa para los desafíos del 2020”.

Roger Ferguson, presidente y director ejecutivo de TIAA, recomienda The Man Who Ran Washington, la biografía de James Baker III hecha por Peter Baker y Susan Glasse. Aunque es de una época más reciente, dice Ferguson, todavía se pueden “ver las semillas de la política hiperpartidista de hoy que se plantan durante este período”.

Un año que llamó la atención sobre el legado de la desigualdad racial en Estados Unidos llevó a tres personas en nuestra lista a escoger Caste (Casta) de Isabel Wilkerson. Erika James, decana de Wharton School, dice que la conclusión más alarmante del libro es que “otros países se inspiraron en EE.UU. para sus propias estructuras de castas”, y agregó que era difícil de asimilar, “pero no pude dejar de leerlo”.

No toda la selección es tan seria. Larry Gagosian, el galerista de arte de primera línea, utilizó la historia de la película Chinatown de Sam Wasson para encontrar un nuevo significado en la famosa cita del productor Robert Evans de que el camino hacia el éxito era “apostar por el talento”. Y Mary Mack, directora ejecutiva de banca de consumidores y pequeñas empresas de Wells Fargo, describió las memorias Untamed de Glennon Doyle como “un impulso auténtico y empoderador”.
